As the world grapples with the challenges of solid waste management, India decided to tackle this challenge by launching Swachh Bharat Mission in 2014.
The problem we are trying to solve is threefold and interconnected:
They are unplanned and resource intensive, with extremely low efficiency & effectiveness for collection, resource recovery & disposal. For instance, only 70% of urban solid waste in India is currently collected.
No focus on sanitation staff’s human dignity and safety.
In India, 77%1 of solid waste is not processed and instead transported to open dumps.
Severe overall negative impact on the environment from a hygiene, sustainability and aesthetic perspective.
To solve this SWM problem, we aspire to:
We practice these principles while trying to tackle this problem:
Dignity of Labour and Enhanaced Livelihoods
Stakeholder Integration
Maximum Resource Recovery
Mandatory Source Segregation of Waste
Long Term Monitoring
Focus on Data
